It hurts me to know how many people look down on homeless people or mistreat them, most of them are really good people, and a lot of them don’t “choose homelessness” as many might think, those who do have mental illnesses. Give these individuals the benefit of the doubt, you are no better than them. Sure, some* might choose to do drugs and not accept the help, but addiction is a illness too and as long as they are struggling to fight it, you should not look at them in a bad light. I have had the wonderful opportunity to work on a research paper this semester with a graduate student who gave interviews to individuals who were a part of the newspaper organization called Spare Change which allows those who are in poverty or are homeless to sell papers to make money. After reading the interviews, I developed the upmost respect for the individuals, I thought to myself, wow these people are much more merciful and kind then the average person, even despite the hostility and mistreatment they receive on a daily basis.
